MOVEMENT AS THERAPY IN THE TREATMENT OF OVERWEIGHT & OBESE POPULATIONS

Over the last 10 years, the number of Americans that are considered overweight or obese has risen to 50%. No matter what diagnosis brings a client to treatment, their medical conditions will frequently be complicated or exaccerbated by excessive weight. The primary method for dealing with weight "problems" has been to prescribe diets, medications, or exercise programs for weight loss which rarely address the immediate physical and emotional needs of overweight individuals. This 2 day course will provide an opportunity for participants to draw on their own movement experiences with yoga, t'ai chi, social dance, and eurhythmics, toward an understanding of how movement can enable overweight and obese clients to find comfort and enjoyment in their bodies as they currently exist. Presented by Lauren Morimoto & Dianne Kadonaga.

Objectives

In this 2 day course, participants will learn:

  • techniques to work with overweight and obese clients in their present condition, which challenge the current treatment protocol (ie. to lose weight).
  • eurhythmic concepts of anacrusis, crusis, and metacrusis and how they relate to human movement.
  • to incorporate their own experience in movement practices to generate therapeutic options for overweight and obese clients.
